Uncover the World

Hi
I've just booked up for the Splendour tour 13th March 2010.

Just wondering whether hotel restaurants are open to the public or if they are for guests only?
I'd imagine they are open to all but this isn't always the case.

Also, is alcohol expensive in Egypt? I don't drink a lot, and when i do it's usually just Whiskey...but on holiday i do like to try lots of different cocktails so mainly curious as to what price a cocktail usually is?
So i can make a fairly good estimate on how much spending moeny i'll require.

Cheers
Mark

We've been trying to remember and think drink prices were roughly similar to what you'd expect in similar UK hotels (Egyptian hotels were 4+ star UK equivalent)

As for restaurant bookings - you can eat at other hotels and in Luxor we did. We couldn't get a table in the hotel where we were waiting until it was time to get the train back to Cairo, so we walked up the road to where other members of group were staying prior to their transfer to Hurghada and had lunch there instead.

In Cairo, you would probably need to phone ahead and book as there were in security guards on the gate.

Thanks for the info.
Drink sounds fairly reasonable then compared to what i'm used to. (Vegas alcohol prices).
Should be able to make a good estimate on spending money then.

I'll remember to make reservations for any particular restaurants we want to try then. I mean if a place is quite far from our hotel then i'm not sure how advisable it is to walk about much in the evening. I've been told by a friend who lived there for 2 years that some areas must be avoided at night. So maybe we won't be going too far anyway...

Thanks

We ate where we stayed each night. To be honest, our schedule was very busy & tiring on the tour and the restaurants where we stayed stayed were good - so there was little inclination to go elsewhere. We ate extremely well.

In Cairo, I wouldn't walk out after dark. Taxis would be much safer. Luxor was different and wandering there was fine.

I imagined that it would be fairly busy each day as you say so we will also likely just eat where we stay too. There was really only 1 particular restaurant in Cairo we fancied going out of our way to get to so we'll probably just book a taxi to that if we have time. If not, i checked each hotel and they all have plenty nice sounding restaurants. A year ago i couldn't have went somewhere like Egypt because i was so fussy with food...now i can eat anywhere thankfully!

Thanks again for the info. Much appretiated.

We ate very well, and were not ill throughout. Take extra care with hand washing - and avoid salads that may have been washed in ordinary tap water. On buffets, watch out for anything hot that may have been standing for too long. Your stomach may not be able to cope with the Egyptian bacteria as well as the locals!

Have a fab time. We did!

A further thought. The Egypt Uncovered staff are really helpful and the traffic in Cairo is dire (probably an understatement)

It may be possible to arrange for the transport to drop you off in the vicinity of the restaurant that you are interested in at the end of your day out and then you only have to arrange a taxi home.

I'd rty an email before you go out to Egypt!

That's a good idea. I'll see if that can be arranged before we go. Not really sure how far apart all these places are so i guess the first thing is to find that out on google maps.

If they are miles apart then i'll probably just not bother. But if they are fairly close then hopeulyl we can sort something out.
24 weeks to go! Hm, i better not count just yet...
