Having just returned from a trip to Dahab, I really must thank Ben Whitehead, for his fantastic organisational skills, his intuition at knowing exactly what sort of travellers we are, and for using the best guide in Dahab, Hany who accommodated our needs and requirements with flair, talent and wonderful humour.
Initially the trip started badly, due to no fault of Egypt uncovered I might add, We made the mistake of flying with Thomson from DSA, the sea of football shirts holding back enormous beer bellies, consuming lager at a rate of knots near the departure gate made my heart sink. And hence for the next 5.5 hours we were subjected to the antics of people who really shouldn't be let out of the country.
My dismay immediately ended when the the chavs were herded onto coaches, and we were met by Egypt Uncovereds contact, where we were whisked in air conditioned comfort through the wonderful mountain range to our hotel le Meridian.
The hotel was outstanding on all levels, enhanced by great staff and facilities. Adam who runs the water sports is strict about your safety re: watersports and swimming/snorkelling, but its for your own good, as the nearby reef contains a number of critters who can do you harm.
If you are into your wind related watersports Dahab is wonderful, a constant strong breeze is ideal, and provides comfort under the relentless sun.
I would highly recommend befriending Ali on the beach who is adept at securing you a bungalow on the beach. You cant miss him, he is the guy with the biggest grin you will have ever seen.
Our guide Hany arranged a number of trips which were delightful, including our Romantic Bedouin dinner, kindly arranged by Ben W, After a short Jeep/Camel ride into the mountains, we arrived at a bedouin camp (NB Genuine one, not a Thomson themed special!) where we had the most amazing dinner cooked over the hot coals under a jet black sky pieced by the most amazing stars (What light pollution) a night that was truly magical and not to be forgotten.
If you do oe trip in Dahab we cannot recommend this one highly enough.
We would be happy to recommend Egypt Uncovered, Ben and Hany to friends and family, in fact anyone who will listen.
Sadly as expected the return flight home was to be as expected, where we overheard many tales of s & d, heat stroke and being "robbed" by shopkeepers, and the "filth" We never had any stomach troubles, all the traders and restaurateurs were friendly and honest. I guess what you give you you receive in spades.
I will be going back, But Ben who flies scheduled via Cairo?, I am more than happy to re-visit Dahab, but cannot face another Thomson flight, unless armed with Bose Noise cancelling earphones, a gin and tonic and a valium.
PS If your reading this and your football shirt barely covers your girth, Visit Thomson.com and stay in Sharm or Blackpool
